American Oystercatcher near Indian Point
on the shore of Matagorda Bay..
Easily identified by its bright orange bill and ring around
the eye, the American Oystercatcher is found along the Atlantic and Gulf
Coast. As its name implies, it does feed on oysters as well as other shell
fish. According to the Audubon web site, the American Oystercatcher is considered
a "Species of High Concern,"
due to the low numbers of birds in North America. (June 2007) |
